ASUS ZenFone 7 bootloader unlock tool and kernel source code are now available

The newly launched ASUS ZenFone 7 series retains the iconic “Flip Camera” design from its predecessor, but it does pack in a number of necessary upgrades as well. Apart from the anticipated jump to Qualcomm’s latest flagship tier Snapdragon 865 (on the non-Pro variant) and Snapdragon 865 Plus (on the Pro variant), the transition from LCD to AMOLED display is perhaps the most significant improvement in this generation. On the software side, the ASUS ZenFone 7 lineup offers a near-stock interface with several added functionalities in the form of ZenUI 7. The Taiwanese OEM is known for encouraging the aftermarket development community to utilize the excellent hardware with the help of custom ROMs or other mod, and the new ZenFone models have just become a part of that venture. The company has now released the kernel source code as well as a dedicated tool for bootloader unlocking for the phone duo.

Similar to other ASUS devices, the bootloader on these smartphones can be unlocked using a unique device-specific unlock tool. The process completely wipes the target device and disables subsequent OTA updates. ASUS has also published a unified kernel source for these smartphones, which will come in handy for third party developers cooking custom recoveries, kernels, and ROMs after unlocking the bootloader. The latest available package corresponds to software version V29.10.22.44. You can’t find any commit history in the archives, though, which means developers may face some difficulties in working with the tree.
